Project Benefits

What does new transmission for 1,100 MW of clean, renewable energy look like?

It looks like this…

Unlike a typical transmission project with towers and wires overhead, the Cascade Project, buried under the Columbia River and for short segments underground, will be virtually invisible.

Unlike a typical transmission project with towers and wires overhead, the Cascade Project, buried under the Columbia River and for short segments underground, will be virtually invisible.

The Cascade Renewable Transmission project offers numerous benefits for the Pacific Northwest, including:

Access to High-Quality, Affordable Clean Energy

A secure new pathway for transmitting abundant renewable generation from east of the Cascades to meet growing demand and renewable energy policy.

Jobs and Increased Tax Base

New jobs for project construction, plus the potential for hundreds of additional jobs to build and operate new renewable generation facilities east of the Cascades that will use the new transmission capacity. These new renewable energy projects will provide ongoing economic support to the local communities, and the Project converter stations will bring new local tax revenues.

Improved Reliability

Proven state of the art HVDC technology that enhances the stability and reliability of the transmission system in addition to increasing transmission capacity. Located entirely underground and underwater, the Project will also have significantly less exposure to, and mitigate the impact of, wildfires.

Environmentally Compatible

Minimal impact on river habitat, fishing, recreation, and natural resources along the Columbia River corridor due to benign installation and operation methods.
